Dairy Free Oreo Truffles
Luckily, Oreos are allergen friendly! But, I like to make treats and something I was really having fun making before learning about my sons allergies were Oreo truffles, sometimes known as Oreo Balls. The problem with this was the cream cheese. But, by searching I found vegan cream cheese and chocolate.
Ingredients:
Oreos
Vegan Cream Cheese
Chocolate chips (I use semi sweet which are dairy free, if you want milk or white chocolate, I recommend finding allergen friendly, dairy free, or vegan chocolate chips. Or you could make your own dairy free chocolate, which I will cover in another post later)
Vegan Butter or Regular Soy or Rice Milk
Directions:
Put your whole package of Oreos in a gallon ziplock bag.
Smash them until they're pretty much powder. (I use a rolling pin)
Pour your crushed Oreos into a bowl.
Add 8 oz of cream cheese. Mix well until it is a dough like consistency.
Lay out wax or parchment paper on a cookie sheet.
Take the mixture and roll into 1/4 to 1/2 inch balls and lay them on the paper. Leave some space between then though so you have enough room when they're coated.
Place your Oreo balls on the cookie sheet in the fridge for about an hour.
Fill a pot with enough water so that it DOES NOT touch the bottom of a bowl on top of the pot but you want it close to the bottom of the bowl.
A glass bowl works best.
Bring the water to almost a boil without the bowl on top.
When the water is steaming but not quite boiling, place the dry, glass or metal bowl on top of the pot, make sure the edges for snugly with the pot.
Add your chocolate chips.
Stir slowly, helping move the melting chocolate around.
When it starts to melt, add about a teaspoon of butter or your preference of soy or rice milk. (This will help prevent the chocolate from seizing up)
Stir it into the melting chocolate.
When the chocolate is completely melted, grab your Oreo balls and a fork.
Put an Oreo ball into the chocolate and roll it around with the fork until it is coated.
Place it back on the paper on the cookie sheet.
Repeat until all of the Oreo balls are coated.
Place back into the fridge for 3-4 hours.
The chocolate will have hardened around the Oreo ball leaning a crunchy chocolate shell and a soft Oreo mixture inside.
Decorate as you please or enjoy them plain!
